Every time I used to see an artist with an artist statement, I wanted to punch them in the face. That was before I started to make art.
In full disclosure I probably would not have been able to hurt most of them, as I am 5’9” and barely 170 lbs. Plus I would never advocate punching anyone anywhere. So I will call it artist thoughts because I keep it real and it sounds less pretentious.
I have paint in my blood, literally. One time I cut my hand while I was painting and got paint inside my bloodstream. I was ok in the end, it was only a small amount of paint. My grandfather also painted.
I am a musician and I started painting so that I could paint some of my own album covers. Then I got hooked. I love that there were people in the mid 20th century who painted black squares on white canvases and then sold those paintings for millions of dollars. My style is not for everyone. If you like puppies, apple pie, mom, long walks on the beach and candle-lit dinners, you will probably like my art.
I strive for perfection but my art is not always perfect. If you want perfection, use a computer. I am not afraid to use pink or lavender paints. I hate clutter and chaos, so I try keep my art simple. Most people paint to relax, painting stresses me out because of the precision my artwork requires. I favor acrylics, alcohol inks and watercolors over oils because I am scared of turpentine, though not scared enough not to dabble. Or use a lot of double negatives.
But wait there is more. I got inspired by an artist using lanyard string (yes, the one you made bracelets with as a kid) and got inspired to work with that medium as well. It is not for the faint of heart due to the fragility of the materials.
If you think my works of art are so simple that you can do them yourself, you probably can. Then again why aren’t you? This is my story and I am sticking to most of it.
